SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Messer evaluates Delta Squad’s recent training, revealing Mirage’s weakness in following the book to the letter and Hayate’s multiple weaknesses, despite a strength of being unpredictable. That evening, Hayate reflects on this alongside Freyja, who reflects on Mikumo’s negative words to her. Both decide not to be defeated. With Windermere having taken over multiple planets, they sent their eyes on their next target on Planet Ionideth. The Aether is dispatched along with Walküre (and other carriers?), where the Spacy forces are falling to Var. Walküre start their concert, projecting themselves onto asteroids, allowing Delta Squad to disable Spacy fighters.
Windermere’s Aerial Knights are in the fray and none too happy to see Hayate’s fighter “dancing with the wind” after he sees Freyja’s image. The Aether is targeted by Brogue to stop Walküre’s concert, so Hayate goes to prevent one of the fighters from landing a killing blow. Aerial Knight Uroh manages to get the best of Mirage in combat, but before he can kill her, Hayate ends up killing him at the cost of his own fighter being disabled along with Mirage’s. The Arial Knights are ordered to retreat, irritating Kieth since the order comes from his little brother, Heinz. After the battle, Mirage consoles Hayate over his first kill, Mikumo shows disdain for Freyja, and Keith shows Heinz some planetary damage in the mountains, which radiates energy. Delta Squad is sent to infiltrate planets occupied by Windermere.
Thoughts/Review:
Whelp, time for some more idol singing in combat ’cause you need to buy the CDs and everything else. If you don’t, you’re a loser, ’cause anime idols are cool and they know it.
You know, the whole idol concert in battle really does detract from the battle itself. Yes, I know, their idiotic music is supposed to magically reverse the magical affects of the magical Var Syndrome, but that requires a magical concert to accomplish this?
Seriously, if the five members of Walküre are the ONLY thing that can stop the Var Syndrom, then you keep them far, far from the combat zone. Further, they don’t need to put on some hideous, flashy idol concert to accomplish this. All they need to do is sing and have said song projected.
Besides, it is laughable to the least when the Walküre are attacked and clearly interrupted when it looks like they are going to be killed, but naturally, the music and the singing keep on somehow, even if the girls say things not in the song.
Mikumo gets to continue playing her smug bitch role (pardon the expression) in this episode. I get that her role is to push Freyja to the next level, but her methods leave a lot to be desired.
On the other hand, I love how Messer has disdain for Hayate, to the point that he doesn’t feel Hayate is not worth talking to. Well, that’s certainly true. I was certainly hoping that Hayate’s continued refusal to wear the helmet in the space battle would have resulted in him nearly dying as a result.
The only thing I can remotely sympathize with Hayate on is his having killed someone for the first time in his life.
I felt bad for Mirage and her getting mildly spanked for being too predictable with her textbook flying. However, one would have thought this problem would have come up a lot sooner. Otherwise, how did she become a Spacy pilot in the beginning before transferring to Chaos.
Unfortunately, I’m sensing that this episode is where the romance flag for Hayate x Mirage was set. Mirage could learn ever so much from Hayate’s unpredictable and idiotic fighter dancing and Hayate could learn ever so much from Mirage’s discipline and dedication. Add to this Mirage consoling Hayate after he was depressed over having taken a life and it was barf city for sure.
Finally, there are the bishounen losers and their whatever. So, the young Heinz has qualms about causing too much death and destruction. Obviously his older brother, Keith, is not happy at being restrained, causing him to take Heinz (who’s apparently superior to Keith since everyone addresses him as Heinz-sama and he gives orders) to that whatever on Windermere’s surface. Cliche rules of storytelling state that this horrific thing, whatever it is, will shake the young Heinz enough to unleash the hounds, as it were.
In the end, I could do without the pretentious idol concert in a battle zone. And I could do without the irritating Hayate and Mikumo as well. In fact, why don’t those two just get together?

Just guessing…Family name?
Sir, you may have found a solution for the plot. They dying together in a big explosion could fix a lot of things too.

Well, even if it was family name that got Mirage into the program, she’d still have to prove herself as a pilot. I think the writers here, in their attempt to bring Mirage and Hayate closer and set the romance flag (and thus the love triangle), just had to give Mirage a stupid flaw so that they could relate.

They did mention in ep 4 where their fold wave effect aka magic song only can produce through life form that is Anima spiritia and song healing effect gone if the song recorded in the machine. Also the farther the distance less effect the healing power. You should rewatch ep 4 and research before you blog this episode and future episode.
To understand ep 8 delta, you have to watch Macross frontier movie 2
Astro didn’t say that a recording is ok. He just said that the concert paraphernalia and flashy things weren’t needed.
Also… I know it is an error of the anime director but… for a moment (when walkure are under attack) they stop to sing and the song still plays on the background, as if they were just doing playback haha.
PD: I watched ep 8 (and Frontier movie 2 some time ago) and I don’t see why it is needed to see the movie to understand the episode. When Astro makes the review of that episode, explain it please. Maybe I’m missing something.
Heh! That’s why I pointed this out. In reality, it makes sense that the girls would pause in singing or the like under the circumstances, but the music keeps playing ’cause “buy the music CD.” 😉
The funny thing there is that the girls stop singing at times, yet the song keeps playing, complete with vocals. So it almost appears that they are just doing a form of lip-synching. 😉
I haven’t watched any of the Macross Frontier movies. Aren’t they just compressed, remakes of the TV series?
Not exactly as Frontier movie 1 there some changes that I not going spoil you. In movie 2 there a huge and major change from series such as Alto got upgrade VF called YF-29 Durandal. You have to watch those movie to allow you understand Delta episode 8 as Hayate and Frejya done so-called magical ability at the end of ep 8 is essentially Alto, Sheryl and Ranka done first in climax of Frontier movie 2. These ensured you don’t jump the gun on that ep 8 called magical and make you look like an ass and idiot.
By the way Heintz able to o that due to Protoculture ruin help amplified and transmit his song throughout space as those ruin composed of Fold quartz and ancient tech that enabled it to transmit it
Their resonance wasn’t something I was thinking of as magical as this has been established a long time back. However, the idol magical abilities are magical indeed, especially when they need a “live” song, which continues to play as the girls discuss an event happening right then and there. 😉
Highly recommend watch Both Macross Frontier as those 2 movie are 100% better than series. It also allow you to understand Delta ep 8
They are on the list, but it will be a while before I can watch them.
Keep in mind that the way they perform the concert here is identical to how they did it with Ranka and the Macross Quarter in the Wings of Goodbye movie, right down to the glass-pyramid stage in space. At this point, it’s really just a staple of Macross for singers to be in the front line: hell, Lynn Minmay in the original, while decked out in her idol outfit and with accompanying stage lights, sang her decisive song from the glass bridge of the SDF Macross while it’s out tanking missiles and taking hits on the front line. Besides, they already explained in episode 4 that they have to be present in the field itself for their songs to be effective.

The original Macross had an excuse: It was the only human ship on the universe, it was the final battle, win or die for all humanity…. Where there other place for Minmay to sing? (NO)…. And another thing: The music on the original Macross was normal music, the concert and the idol performance was part of the strategy: as the Zentran were shocked by the “culture” unknown to them, the humans (and on the spot converted and already exposed new zentran/meltran allies) had a chance to counterattack thanks to that.
Frontier had many flaws, but is a lot better than Delta.

Exactly. The only reason for this flash concert stuff is that idols are popular (in reality and in anime) and they are desperate to sell music CDs, even more than Macross Frontier was.
Yep. The songs and singing weren’t magical in SDF Macross. And as you state, the Zentradi were hearing music for the first time and started questioning things as a result.
That may all be true, but it doesn’t negate the fact that you have only five girls who can stop Var with their magical singing. As such, making them put on a concert is akin to saying, “Please shoot us ASAP!” Because of the needs of the story, they got out lightly. They should be dead.
I’ve no problem with that. (Except that Heinz doesn’t need to be present to sing across the galaxy.) However, they can sing without painting a giant bull’s eye on their backs and having some flash concert. They could sing their silly songs from a secured location on the ship.
